  Pablo Emilio Escobar Gaviria was born on 1 December 1949 in Rio Negro, Antioquia. He was the third child of seven children and grew up in the neighboring city of Medellin. His father was a small farmer and his mother was a teacher. Escobar left high school in 1966 just before his 17th birthday, and two years later he returned to high school with his cousin Gustavo Gaviria.
